The work is the credential

· 2 min read

For a long time there was one accepted way into serious design work. You interned at a big company. You worked your way up under people who had done the same. After a decade you had a title, a network, and the right to be taken seriously.

That path still works. It is no longer the only one.

Some of the studios startup founders most want to hire are run by very young teams. Many of them never interned anywhere. They learned from tutorials, then from years of freelancing, sharpening their craft inside Figma files. Founders backed by the biggest venture firms hire them anyway.

A lot of established designers resent this. I understand why. They paid for their position with years, and now people who took none of those steps are winning the same clients.

The resentment is misplaced. Nobody skipped the work. They took a different road to the same skill, and the skill is what the client pays for.

It isn’t only design. The same shift is happening to developers and to founders. There are teams of very young app founders who have never worked on a successful product. On paper, better-credentialed and better-staffed teams should be running circles around them. In practice, the young teams often outship them and outgrow them.

Most young teams fail. Plenty of credentialed teams fail too. The credential was never what decided it.

A credential was always a proxy. It told you someone had probably learned the job. It still counts for something. It counts for less than what someone actually ships.

Studios have their proxies too: headcount, senior titles. They mean less than you think.

If you came up the other way, don’t copy the old authority. Don’t hide behind big words, long meetings and talk of process. Don’t hide behind the name of a company you once worked for, or behind your network. A lot of that was always fugazi: authority claimed, not earned.

Point to one thing: what you have done for the people who needed your help. That was always the job. Now it’s the résumé too.
